If you're planning a wedding this year and are looking for some fresh ideas for your theme, we're here to help. From colors to decorations and lighting for that perfect romantic effect, we've hunted down the experts to share the latest trends in wedding themes for 2016.

In order to put together a wedding event that has a classical feel without being cliched, it's important to avoid what's been overdone and focus on what's been carried off recently to the greatest effect- and the overarching message from the top wedding planners this year is, homemade vintage themes are old hat. To strike the right chord in 2016, think elegance.

Experiment With Gold & Shades of Red

Black, in different textures, shades of gold and red are very popular at the moment. Rose gold flickering is very popular and is fairly resistant to overuse. Top wedding designer, Amy Wang predicts that spring weddings this year are going to be rich with deep reds flecked and trimmed with gold- all set against textured black surfaces for a deep and elegant effect.

“Reds, nice deep maroons and shades of fuchsia are also big,” Wang said, “as well as plenty of rich-looking copper and brass. Some people prefer whites and neutral greens. But gold is certainly the dominant color throughout."

Give Artificial Flowers Another Chance

In the past, and for good reason, artificial flowers have earned a bad reputation as being tacky and unconvincing. But today, with advanced manufacturing techniques there are many convincing looking artificial flowers that can be used to great effect.

Given, they are not very good for centerpieces and bouquets- but they can be used to fill in large blocks of background, hung from ceilings in clusters. If done right, artificial flowers can change an ordinary wedding into one with a feeling of resplendence.

Just remember that their use should be both subtle and sweeping, (think distance), in order to get their full effect. The trick is to use real flowers in places where your guests will come into close contact with them, and layer in artificial flowers in the background.

Consider Bauble Lighting for a Shimmering Romantic Effect

Outdoor ceremonies and garden weddings present an ideal opportunity to incorporate a selection of hanging candles and tea lights.

“Pendent lights and candle baubles are very popular because they give off this wonderfully romantic impression,” Ms. Wang said. “With conventional lanterns, you see the metal and wood. But with baubles they appear to be floating on air. All you see are the beautiful flickering lights.”

Layering in these three tips together will create a complete setting for your wedding ceremony this year, and surround your memories in a beautiful shimmer.
